WWTP in Frýdek-Místek will have its heart better aerated

Thanks to a repair for six million Czech crowns the waste water treatment plant will get 2406 aeration elements for aeration and agitation of aero-tanks

Ostrava 13. 6. 2017 - Employees of a wastewater treatment plant in Frýdek-Místek, who are currently preparing the second corridor of activated tanks for repair, must face hot weather. Work on the first of them has been completed; final completion of repair is planned for July. Work had to be divided into two parts in order for the wastewater treatment plant to continue serving its main purpose during the whole time of repair, i.e. releasing to Ostravice treated water from households and companies in Frýdek-Místek and surroundings.

“Aero-tanks make up an imaginary heart of the wastewater treatment plant. Together with air that we force into the tanks, the aerobic bacteria remove most of the organic water pollution and then nitrogen and phosphorus compounds.  It is the aeration elements in these tanks that deserve to be replaced due to their wear and tear in order for them to be able to evenly aerate the activation mixture,” says the sewer system director, SmVaK Ostrava, Jan Tlolka.

In addition to the replacement of more than 2400 aeration elements, also six immersion agitators and six oximeters for measuring and securing optimum concentration of suspended oxygen will be replaced.

The replacement itself is preceded by the physically most demanding part of the repair. SmVaK Ostrava employees have to go several meters down to the emptied tanks and in these demanding conditions prepare the site for the installation of the aforementioned process equipment.

The wastewater treatment plant in Frýdek-Místek has two corridors of aero-tanks. We have to repair them step by step to always keep one of them in full operation and secure wastewater treatment in the volume that comes to the plant,” explains Tlolka.

The wastewater treatment plant for Frýdek-Místek was built in a nearby Svidanov and it has been in operation since 1967. Beside household and local businesses, Radegast brewery in Nošovice is also connected to it. The wastewater treatment plant has gone through a series of modernizations, reconstructions and capacity extensions, of which the largest one took place in 1990-1995.  Its current wastewater treatment capacity is approximately 165 thousand population equivalent and it can treat 40 thousand cubic meters of wastewater a day.

Remarks

Screen – process equipment used to remove floating impurities from wastewater. The trapped impurities are called screenings.

Mechanical part of the wastewater treatment plant – first part of the plant at the inflow of wastewater from the sewer system. Gravel trap, screen and sand trap, sedimentation tank where coarse floating impurities and undissolved substances are removed

Biological part of the wastewater treatment plant – follows after the mechanical part. Bacteria are used to remove pollution, it includes also the aero-tank and settling tank.

Agitator – mixes the activation mixture (wastewater, activated sludge) in order for the organic impurities in mechanically pre-treated wastewater to be efficiently broken down.

Aeration elements – are used to mix and aerate wastewater in aero-tanks in the biological part of the wastewater treatment plant.

Aero-tank – heart of the wastewater treatment plant; aerobic bacteria with air, which is constantly forced into the tank, with its metabolism remove 99% of organic water pollution.

Settling tank – treated water is separated from the activated sludge that sediments. Treated water runs back to nature.
