Reliability of supplies
The Ostrava Area Water System is operated as a gravity system where water pipelines distribute the drinking water from central sources. Drinking water is supplied continuously without interruptions thanks to the gravity distribution into central water reservoirs - such supply is independent of electricity. Drinking water needs to be pumped only in Vítkov and Orlová, some towns in the Beskydy Mountains and some small consumer areas.
Distribution pipelines distribute the water into central water reservoirs. Even if there is an emergency in the central distribution system, the facilities are able to supply the drinking water for a long time.
The drinking water supplies are highly reliable because the pipeline branches are connected with each other in the system. If a central source of water is shutdown, it is still possible to supply the drinking water.
When managing the emergencies which influence continuity of the drinking water supplies (a blackout, flood, or shutdown of a central source of drinking water), steps are taken in line with the emergency plan which specifies the measures that should ensure continuity of the drinking water supplies in case of emergencies. Common failures are corrected as soon as possible.
