Ostrava Area Water System
Construction of the Ostrava Area Water Network (“OOV”) started in 1954. This is the basic system for production and distribution of drinking water for majority of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
It consists of three central water treatment plants, Podhradí u Vítkova, Nová Ves u Frýdlantu nad Ostravicí and Vyšní Lhoty, which treat the raw water taken from the dams in Kružberk, Šance and Morávka. Drinking water produced in the central water treatment plants represents 95% of total production in SmVaK. The central water treatment plants are connected through a system of distribution pipelines. The total length of water pipelines is 500 km, From the geographical point of view, the system is divided into the Kružberk Group Water Network and Beskydy Group Water Network. The both systems are connected with each other and can replace each other in case of shutdown of any central water treatment plant.
In some locations of the distribution system, the gravity fall of the water is used to generate electricity in turbines that are built in the pipes.
