Ostrava, 19 February 2019. On Saturday, 23 March, Severomoravské vodovody a kanalizace Ostrava will open for visitors the wastewater treatment plants in Opava, Havířov, Karviná and Frýdek-Místek (Sviadnov). The biggest water treatment plant in Podhradí near Vítkov will open its gates not only on the 23rd March but also on the next Saturday, the 30th March because there are many people who wish to see the plant. This is a unique opportunity to visit the facility which has undergone major reconstruction in past years. The plant, which is a perfect example of the industrial architecture from the 1950s, celebrated sixty years of operation last year. The main entrance is decorated by Vincenc Makovský’s relief from the cycle name Water in Our Life.
“In past, the interest in our water facilities was beyond our expectation. That is why I would like to ask those who wish to see our plants to book their visit well in time. The capacity is, of course, limited. In some facilities, it will be full very fast. All plants are in full operation during excursions and it is necessary to ensure not only smooth operation, but also safety of all visitors.

The visitors will see the biggest wastewater treatment plants and the biggest water treatment facility which supplies drinking water to most parts of our region as well as to some parts of the Olomouc region. Last year, the plant celebrated sixty years of reliable operation. It is open for the public in really exceptional cases only - only three times in past 30 years.

Because so many people wished to see it last year, it will be open on two subsequent Saturdays this year", says Managing Director Anatol Pšenička.

In the water treatment plant in Podhradí, the visitors will see places which supplied sixty years ago, in December 1958, the first water from Kružberk to Krásné Pole near Ostrava in order to deliver the drinking water for the region of Ostrava which was developing dynamically. The visitors can see the impressive sand filter hall that can treat as many as 2,700 litres of drinking water per second.

In addition to the excursion with detailed comments, the visitors will see in each wastewater treatment plant a sewage truck which is used for cleaning the sewers, sewerage and rainwater. The personnel will be explaining what should be avoided in sewers and what consequences  unsuitable objects and substances in sewers can have during treatment of wastewater. They will also explain the process and parameters of water before it is discharged back to the natural environment.

The plants will be open from 8 am until 2pm. Excursions will start each hour (8 am, 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm and 1 pm). The capacity will be limited - not more than twenty visitors in each group.

The wastewater treatment plants will be open for public on the 23rd March. The water treatment plant in Podhradí will be open on the 23rd and 30th March in the same time.
Those who wish to visit the facilities should book in advance not later than the 20th Match at  596 697 233 or barbora.golova@smvak.cz.
